2017 started with a crisp, dry day in Dublin as Ger Cunningham watched his side take on a Dublin All-Stars selection in Parnell Park.

The annual game, known as the Blue Stars challenge match, featured a largely experimental side from Cunningham, but it was still enough to overcome their opponents by a score of 1-19 to 1-14.

In naming his panel for this season, the Dublin boss cut a number of high-profile figures, leading others to declare themselves unavailable amid reports of tensions behind the scenes. A victory in this match won't ease the pressure, but it will be important as Cunningham moves into his third season in charge of the Dubs.

The panel of Dubs Stars sponsored by the Herald and Dublin Bus, aims to honour the best club hurlers and footballers in the county. The footballers will also take on a selection of star players from the club game on New Year's Day in a double header at Parnell Park.

Dublin will open their season in the Walsh Cup on Wednesday night as they take on Carlow.
