Team Ireland's Steven Donnelly is through to the quarter-finals in Rio after beating his Mongolian opponent in their Round of 16 welterweight clash.

With three Irish boxers already eliminated thus far at the Olympic games, Donnelly's victory over Tuvshinbat Byamba is a timely boost.

Donnelly was awarded the first round with two judges going in his favour.

The Ballymena man was then deemed to have lost the second round with two of the three judges giving the round against him.

And the third round went in Donnelly's favour as he won by split decision to set up a bout against Morocco's Mohammed Rabii in the quarter-finals.

If he wins that last-eight clash, he will be into the semi-finals and at least a bronze medal for his efforts.
