Plenty of Liverpool players had crucial roles as the Reds stunned AC Milan in Istanbul nine years ago in the Champions League final.

But chief among them on that glorious night for the club was Didi Hamann.

The ex-German midfielder joined us, Robbie Fowler and Jason McAteer at Vicar Street tonight and revealed a few nuggets of info about one of the most famous nights in Liverpool's history.

 3 - 0 down at half-time, Hamann recalled Rafa Benitez' team-talk as the Reds looked to swing the result in their favour in the most unlikely of circumstances.

"I didn't know at the time what Rafa was going to do because we had to make a change in the first half. You go inside and you're deflated because you think you lost the game. But he was as calm as ever and said that we were going to make a change. Djimi Traore was going to come off first and I was going to go on. He went through the team, the way we played with Xabi [Alonso] and myself in midfield and Stevie [Gerrard] with licence to move a little further forward," said Hamann, who added that he felt he had nothing to lose as he came on for the second half.

And the rest as they say is history with Hamann giving a blow by blow of the unbelievable experience. But he also talked about not expecting to win the trophy earlier in the season as the Reds struggled for domestic league form.

However he also revealed his feelings at taking a penalty in the shootout against Milan.

"I went into the centre circle. I didn't know who was going to take the other four [penalties] - I wasn't interested. I just thought 'you make sure you score yours,'" said Hamann, who also touched on Jerzy Dudek and Jamie Carragher's roles in the final.

He also spoke about his topsy-turvy contract situation at Anfield in the lead up to the final.
