Martin O'Neill's feud with fellow ex-Sunderland boss Paulo Di Canio is showing no sign of ending.

The new Republic of Ireland boss called the Italian a "managerial charlatan" after Di Canio criticised the fitness levels of the squad he inherited from O'Neill at Sunderland.

The former West Ham star has now given a fiery response to those comments from O'Neill, also insisting that Sunderland's players were unfit.

"I respect the opinion even of a manager or person that spoke after six months once he felt covered by the job. That proves what level of person he is...not very big," he said.

"I don’t know if he knows the meaning of this word charlatan. Probably I can teach him, even if I am not English. A charlatan is a manager who spends £40 million to be a top 10 club and then sees the club sink into the relegation zone."
