Christina Desmond and Amy Broadhurst have missed out on medals at the women's World Boxing Championships in Siberia.

Cork welterweight Desmond has lost her quarter-final to Turkey's Busenas Surmeneli by unanimous decision.

Despite a strong third-round showing from the Irish champion, the bout was called 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 in Surmeneli's favour.

The Turkish fighter is a previous world and youth gold medal winner at middleweight.

Amy Broadhurst also suffered defeat at the last-eight stage.

The Louth lightweight lost on a unanimous decision to Finland's European champion Mira Potkonen.

Number-one seed Potkonen, who defeated Katie Taylor at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, was given the bout by all the judges 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Today's defeats end Ireland's interest at the competition and the team will return home empty-handed.
