Republic of Ireland international Darron Gibson has joined Salford City on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old former Manchester United, Everton and Sunderland midfielder has been without a club since leaving Wigan Athletic last May.

"I'm looking forward to it, it’s a new challenge. I like where the club is heading, trying to push for promotion," the Derry man said on signing for the League Two side.

"I’ve been to a few games, the standard has been very good. From what I can gather the standard has been very good at training. I’ve been to a few games and the standard has been very good.

"I’m just looking forward to trying to build up my fitness and getting involved as soon as I can.”

Salford, who are currently mid-table in the English third-flight, are part-owned by Gibson's former Manchester United teammates Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.

Gibson has 27 caps for his country but hasn't played for the Republic of Ireland since 2016.
