Shane Long has been strongly linked with a switch to Liverpool during this January window, but at least one of the club's former players would not be backing the Irishman in his move to Anfield.

Reports suggested that an £8 million bid by Liverpool had been rejected by Southampton already, and it seems that Jurgen Klopp is keen on bringing Long's high-energy, pressing style of football to his team.

However, despite having already spent quite a bit of money on signing Christian Benteke from Aston Villa during the last transfer window, Liverpool haven't solved their problems up front, as the German manager attempts to leave his mark on the side.

Speaking on Talksport after Liverpool lost to Manchester United on Sunday, Danny Murphy revealed that he didn't think the move would be good for either party.

When asked about the possible transfer, he was surprised that it was even on the cards, saying "Really? No. No, no no no".

He went on to say that "you wouldn't suggest Long is a better player than Benteke. I don't think so. If you're going to play him [Benteke] you've got to play to his strengths. The way Liverpool play at the moment isn't really suitable to what Benteke's good at, but do you know what? He's still their top goal scorer".
