Following last weekend’s SSE Airtricity League action it was looking like Shamrock Rovers might be returning to the top of the pile in the League of Ireland, but this morning it’s Cork City staking a claim to the league’s most notable renaissance following a 3-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in front of 5,676 fans at Turner’s Cross.

Cork and Rovers went into the game level on 10 points but that parity was absent from the 90 minutes last night. Former Rovers man Billy Dennehy opened the gap on 14 minutes and for the rest of the first half Cork pushed forward, creating several chances to put a second past their visitors.

It was just 8 minutes into the second half when that goal came. Mark O’Sullivan scored a header from a Billy Dennehy cross.

Another Dennehy added a third just 11 minutes later, with Darren finishing off a Colin Healy cross.

Cork City go top of the table on 13 points, 2 clear of Drogheda United. Shamrock Rovers drop to third.

Dundalk tasted a morsel of revenge last night, thrashing their conquerors of last year, St. Pat’s, 4-1 at Richmond Park.
Chris Forrester opened the scoring after 30 minutes but a second half onslaught saw Liam Buckley’s side taste defeat for the first time this season. Second half goals from John Mountney, Daryl Horgan, David McMillan and Sean Gannon leave Buckley’s side with just 6 points from their opening 5 games, while Dundalk move up to fourth, 3 points off league leaders Cork City.

Declan O’Brien scored a hat-trick for Drogs last night to lead them to a 3-2 win over former manager Mick Cooke’s Athlone Town side.

Derry City picked up their first league win of the season last night, with an Enda Curran strike settling matters in a 1-0 win over Sligo. Sligo have won just one game so far and the 2012 champions now sit second from bottom with just 3 points from the first 15.

A stoppage time strike from Limerick’s Jason Hughes put a halt to UCD’s march, cutting the students winning streak short at two and giving Limerick their third draw and point of the season. Tomas Boyle had put the students ahead in the 55th minute.

Bohs came from behind, and a man down, to grab a home draw against Bray. Dinny Corcoran scored in the 88th minute to cancel out Graham Kelly’s 27th minute penalty. The penalty came after a red card for Bohs Dean Delaney for a foul in the area on Jake Kelly.
