American soft drink manufacturer Coca Cola has become the first major sponsor to openly voice concerns over FIFA's investigation into allegations of corruption surrounding the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. The company's sponsorship deal is worth over £300 million (€379 million).

A spokesman for Coca Cola spoke to The Sunday Times recently and said: "Anything that detracts from the mission and ideals of the FIFA World Cup is a concern to us. The current conflicting perspectives regarding the investigation are disappointing. Our expectation is that this will be resolved quickly in a transparent and efficient manner."

The English, Dutch, German, Swedish, Belgian and Danish football federations have all demanded that the full report be published - so far only a summary has been made available. The head of FIFA’s ethics committee, Michael Garcia, has distanced himself from the published findings and said that they misrepresent his investigation.

McDonald's and Adidas, two other major sponsors, also spoke to The Sunday Times and expressed concerns about the allegations, but stopped short of making any openly-critical comments. McDonald's is 'monitoring the situation,' while Adidas plans to discuss the report directly with FIFA.

Earlier this month, Dubai-based airline, Emirates confirmed it was withdrawing its sponsorship. Sony are also understood to be considering cutting its ties with the tournament.
