Hull City defender Andrew Robertson says referee Mark Clattenburg apologised after half time for allowing Arsenal's opening goal to stand.

Arsenl beat Hull 2-0 in the Premier League clash at the Emirates in the Saturday early kick off.

But there was controversy regarding the first goal by Alexis Sanchez on 34 minutes.

The ball came off the Chile international's hand before going in but referee Clattenburg eventually ruled that it was a legitimate goal.

However, at half time, he apologised to Hull according to Robertson.

The Hull full back told Sky Sports: "Yeah it was handball. When we came out at half-time, the referee's apologised to us. He said it was a handball, so he's obviously looked at it at half-time and seen he was in the wrong."

Robertson had sympathy for Clattenburg however.

He said: "It happens so quick that it's a tough one for the ref, you've got to kind of feel sorry for him. At the end of the day, these decisions don't really go your way when you come to these big stadiums and that's killed us."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who was in the stands as he serves his touchline ban, said he didn't see the incident from his vantage point.
