Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett has resigned as Laois manager.

The Portlaoise man recently brought the county to the Leinster quarter finals where they are due to play Offaly on June 7th but is walking away, after two players featured in a club challenge match against his wishes last Monday.

Team trainer Ger Cunningham will take over for their meeting with their neighbours on Sunday week. Plunkett took over the O'Moore County at a low ebb in 2013 leading them back into Division 1B and to improved Championship performances.

The Laois County Board have released a short statement on the matter.

"Laois County Board regret to announce Seamas Plunkett has stepped down as Laois Senior Hurling manager citing personal reasons.

Laois County Board would like to thank Seamas for his contribution to Laois hurling over the last number of years and look forward to working with him again in the near future.

Ger Cunningham has been appointed as interim manager with immediate effect."
