Dustin Johnson's rise to become the top ranked player in the world has been a mixture of excellent play with some luck thrown in as well.

The current US Open champion enjoyed a tremendous 2016 finishing inside the top ten in 14 of the tournaments he entered.

His purple patch started in June last year when he followed up third place at the Memorial Tournament and fifth place at the FedEx St. Jude Classic with his first major win in the US Open at Oakmont and another win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in his next outing.

He also won the BMW Championship in November and was pipped by Rory McIlroy to the FedEx Cup honours after the Northern Irishman won the Tour Championship after winning a play-off against Ryan Moore on the fourth extra hole.

Injuries to both Jason Day and McIlroy in recent months have curtailed their involvment on tour and Johnson has capitalised on thier absence.

Since the start of the new season, he has had three top six finishes at the Hero World Challenge, the SBS Tournament of Champions and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am before winning the Genesis Open on Sunday.
