Fabio Capello has claimed Alex Ferguson quit football due to the levels of stress and a desire to travel the world with his wife.

Capello said today he had spoken with Ferguson on Thursday, and the Scot explained to him he was choosing to go now because there was too much stress in the job.

"I called him yesterday and he told me he has decided to go now because there is too much stress nowadays. Always having to win something is very challenging, and he told me he wanted to go around the world with his wife,” Capello said.

"His secret is amazing. To have that strength and ability to change things and improve every year, and always have the same desire to win."

Mancehster United announced Ferguson would retire at the end of the current season,  early on Wednesday morning and Capello admitted the announcement of his retirement took him by surprise, saying:
"I met him a few months ago and he told me he would carry on, so the news of his retirement surprised me".
