British racing driver Sean Edwards has been killed in a crash at a race in Australia.

The 26-year-old was a passenger in a Porsche 996 when the vehicle crashed into a wall during a private test at Queensland Raceway.

He has been taking part in the Porsche Supercup championship this season in which he was leading the standings by 18 points.

He also won the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May.

He had taken part in filming for Rush portraying his father Guy Edwards in certain scenes. His father was one of the drivers who helped rescue ex-Formula One champion Niki Lauda from his flaming car after a horrific crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.

The driver of the Porsche was removed from the vehicle by emergency services after a three-hour operation and taken to intensive care with life-threatening injuries.
