FIFA have imposed a fine of 5,000 CHF (€4,669) on the FAI for wearing jerseys that commemorated the 1916 Rising, during a friendly match against Switzerland earlier this year. 

The organisation has released a statement on their website confirming that Ireland and a number of other nations have been issued fines for wearing shirts carrying symbols that can be interpreted as political.

"With these decisions, it is not our intention to judge or question specific commemorations as we fully respect the significance of such moments in the respective countries, each one of them with its own history and background. However, keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA’s 211 member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited. In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else," said the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser.

FIFA has also fined England and Scotland for wearing poppies on their shirts during the football qualifier at Wembley Stadium last month.

England has been fined 45,000 CHF (€42,000) for "several incidents" during the match, including displaying a "political symbol and several cases of spectator misconduct", according to the FIFA statement.

Scotland was also fined around 20,000 CHF (€18,680) for wearing the poppy during the game, while Wales were fined the same amount. 

Northern Ireland 15,000 CHF (€14,000) for similar offences during their games against Serbia and Azerbaijan respectively.
