It may have come a few days later than expected, but a Bray native finally got their hands on gold on Sunday night.
Finn Balor (aka Fergal Devitt) became the WWE's first ever Universal Champion, defeating Seth Rollins at SummerSlam in New York. The 35-year-old was only promoted to the WWE's main roster a month ago.
Despite not being well known in his native Ireland, Balor has worked around the globe in recent years, gaining a cult following in Japan, before joining the WWE's development brand NXT.

By winning the inaugural Universal Title, it shows how much Balor is respected by the WWE hierarchy. His rapid ascent to winning a title is almost unprecedented.
The Bray native is the second Irishman in recent years to hold a major WWE belt. Dublin fighter Sheamus (aka Stephen Farrelly) is a three-time WWE Champion.
