Sepp Blatter has called for a sin-bin style time penalty for players who dive.

The FIFA president was commenting on the issue in his FIFA Weekly column and proposed that players feigning injury should be made to wait on the sideline by referees.

He wrote that he found it "deeply irritating when the (supposedly) half-dead player comes back to life as soon as they have left the pitch. The touchline appears to have acquired powers of revival which even leading medical specialists cannot explain."

Blatter added that the rules state that players are not required to kick the ball out of play after another player goes down, with the decision in the "referee's court".

Blatter went on to say: "When a 'stricken' player seeks to return to the field of play immediately after being taken off, the referee can make the player wait until the numerical disadvantage has had an effect on the game."

Blatter did not specify exactly how long "stricken" players should wait on the sideline nor what specific effect would allow for that player to return to the field of play.

Fernando Torres and Adnan Januzaj are among the worst offenders when it comes to punishments for diving in the Premier League since 2008. The Chelsea and Man United players have both received three bookings for diving, with Ashley Young, Daniel Sturridge  and Luis Suarez among the players to have received two each since bookings were introduced for the offence in '08.

But in comparison to the other players, Januzaj's three yellow cards for diving have all come within just 14 appearances. The attacking midfielder is already joint-second on the all-time list behind Gareth Bale who has was booked seven times for diving during his time in the Premier League.

Due to Januzaj's efforts, Manchester United top the "diving table" in the Premier League this season with four, two ahead of second placed Chelsea. However Tottenham pip Chelsea and United in the all-time table with 13 yellow cards for diving since 2008, compared to 12 for the latter two.
