Barcelona have terminated the contract of the club's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

The former Barca and Spain goalkeeper served in the role over the last four years but the club have decided to part ways just days after a transfer ban was confirmed.

In a statement, the club said: "The FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has decided to terminate as of today the contract of the Club's Director of Football, Andoni Zubizarreta."

Former club captain Carles Puyol has stepped down from his role as Zubizarreta's assistant. He announced his decision on his Facebook page, telling fans that he learned a lot in the role he took up in September 2014.
