Last season, Vilanova led Barcelona to the La Liga title in his only season in charge at the Nou Camp.
Vilanova missed part of that season as he underwent treatment.
But he had to step down permanently last summer after he suffered a relapse.
A native of Catalonia, Vilanova started his playing career in Barca's youth ranks. He would later return to the club as an assistant to Guardiola when the latter took charge of Barcelona B.
He would make the step up to first team when his long-time friend was appointed as manager in 2008, succeeding Guardiola in 2012.
The Nou Camp will be opened tonight in order to allow fans to pay tribute.
