The story of the Wimbledon team of the 1980s and 1990s got the documentary treatment in the riveting Crazy Gang film.

But the club which inherited the club's names after Wimbledon morphed into MK Dons, is about to get the movie treatment.

Author John Green, who wrote Looking For Alaska and The Fault In Our Stars, has revealed that he will be working on a movie about AFC Wimbledon that will be produced by FOX 2000 and Temple Hill Entertainment.

In a blog post, Green wrote that "an agreement was announced, so I wanted to drop by Medium and explain why my next film project is about not American teenagers but a lower league English football club.

"So, okay: In May of 2002, the English Football Association gave the owners of a club called Wimbledon F.C. permission to move 70 miles away, to a town called Milton Keynes. Despite fervent protests from Wimbledon fans, the FA decided that it was “not in the wider interests of football” to have a club based in Wimbledon."

AFC Wimbledon now play in League Two of the Football League having started out in the ninth tier of English football just over a decade ago.
