Atletico Madrid's Champions League progression at the expense of Barcelona has been tempered with the news that they may have to factor without on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Should they be drawn against Chelsea in the last four, Atletico will have to pay Courtois' parent club up to €6 million if the Belgian plays.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo says his club simply cannot afford to pay such a fee.

"If we draw Chelsea, Courtois won't play. It is a figure we cannot pay," he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

Courtois is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in world football and has played an important role in Atletico's recent rise. 

Dani Aranzubia is likely to deputize if Atletico are drawn against Chelsea.
