Anthony Cunningham’s Galway enjoyed a rough around the edges, but highly satisfying, win over All Ireland champions Kilkenny in yesterday’s curtain raiser for the Allianz Hurling League season.

The Galway manager admitted it had been “heavy weather winning that match” but was happy to take a morale boosting win over their conquerors of last year.

Joe Canning played a withdrawn role in yesterday’s win, dropping off into space and creating openings for other players as he found space. Cunningham was happy with how his star man performed.

“I think Joe set up some very good early ball in. Joe can play any place.”

When asked about the new restrictions on non-playing staff on the side-line Cunningham responded with as little enthusiasm as most, citing the need for a doctor and additional hurley carriers to be on the side of the pitch.
