Carmelo Anthony made history on Sunday night become the first ever basketball player to win three Olympic gold medals.

The New York Knicks star has played in every American Olympic team since 2004, when the team disappointingly won a bronze medal in Athens. Since then he has been an integral part of the team that won gold in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro.

After the team's win over Serbia in the Olympic Final, the emotional 32-year-old spoke to NBC about the 30-point win where he revealed "this is it for me" on the Olympic stage.

"I committed to this in '04. I've seen the worst and I've seen the best and I stuck with it. We stuck with it. I'm here today, three gold medals. I'm excited for me, but also for the guys that have never experienced this before."

Anthony has been very vocal in recent months, in the hope of creating social change in America, despite the racial tensions. He continued to speak about it, moments after the win.

"Despite everything that's going on right now in our country, we got to be united. I'm glad I did what I did. I stepped up to the challenge.

"America will be great again. I believe that. We got a lot to work to do. It's one step at a time. I'm glad we represented it the fashion that we did."

In a tournament, where America regularly struggled, despite the gold medal, Anthony was one of the few players to leave Brazil with his reputation enhanced.
