Boxer Amir Khan is planning to launch an MMA league in Britain in the near future as he looks to capitalise on the popularity of the sport at the moment.

He is currently a financial stakeholder in the Indian MMA promotion "Super Fight League" and wants to set up an eight team league format in Britain.

Speaking to BBC's World Service, the former Olympian said: "MMA is big and getting bigger. Fighters like Conor McGregor are making a lot of noise. MMA is hitting some high numbers on pay per view."

The Briton also indicated he is willing to put his friendship with McGregor aside and fight the Irishman in the future saying: "I am always going to be involved in boxing but to have my foot in the door with MMA is brilliant.

"The market is massive for us. We want to reach countries like India with a population of 1.2 billion people," he added.

Khan hasn't fought since he was knocked out by Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in Las Vegas last May.

He is reportedly in talks with domestic rival Kell Brook for an all-British fight in 2017.
