The Untied States Tennis Association has apologised to the German tennis team after an awkward error during the singing of the national anthems.

A soloist sung a version of the German national anthem associated with Nazi Germany by mistake which caused offence to the visiting team in Hawaii.

The incident occurred before Germany's Andrea Petkovic and Alison Riske of the US were about the face off.

Speaking afterwards Petkovic said: "It was an absolute outrage and affront, the lowest, it was by some way the worst thing that's happened to me, especially in the Fed Cup."

Riske went on to win the match in straight sets 7-6, 6-2.
