Cavan referee Maggie Farrelly is to make a historic appearance on Sunday when she becomes the first female referee to referee a championship match, when she officiates in the minor game between Fermanagh and Antrim at Brewster park.

Farrelly has been refereeing women’s games for several years and in 2006 took charge of a men’s game in Cavan due to a lack of male referees in the county, according to the Irish Examiner.

Farrelly has previously officiated a men’s inter-county game, taking charge of a league encounter between Kerry and Dublin at Croke Park in 2014.
