Michael D Higgins has declined an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to attend a church service to mark Northern Ireland’s centenary. 

It seems to have come as a surprise to the organisers, as the event is due to take place in the coming weeks, and it appears no reason has been given by the President’s spokespeople.
