Having started his career in academia, in 2011 Michael D Higgins became Ireland’s 9th president. Since then, his support of the arts, his love for poetry, for the Irish language and traditional Irish music have become well known. 

On the 18th April, President Higgins will turn 80 and we are taking this opportunity to reflect on his role in Irish society.
