 50 years ago this week the eyes of the world - and America in particular - were fixed on the moon landing.

But while that drama was playing out in space, Senator Ted Kennedy - the youngest brother of President John F Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy - was at the centre of a scandal in Massachusetts. On the night of July 18th, Kennedy crashed his car into a river at Chappaquiddick with a young aide - Mary Jo Kopechne- losing her life in the accident. What followed was a major scandal that ended his chances of being President of the United States and his actions on that night - fifty years ago today - cast a shadow on him for the rest of his life…

Michael Graham has been based in Boston, Massachusetts for many years as a radio host and columnist for The Boston Herald. He spoke to Ivan this evening about the legacy of that night in Chappaquiddick
