Two billion people worldwide have myopia - this means they are short-sighted - and this is set to rise to five billion out of a total population of ten billion by 2050.

While myopia is one of the most common causes of sight loss, people across Ireland are living with reduced sight from a variety of conditions every day.

Today on the Hard Shoulder, we were joined by three guests:

  • Carol Brill from Dublin who has Usher Syndrome
  • Emilie Conway, who has albinism
  • Prof James Loughman from Technical University Dublin who’s running a study to treat shortsightedness

They are speaking ahead of Fighting Blindness Retina 2019 public engagement day for people living with sight loss, which takes place on Saturday November 16, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dublin 8 as part of Science Week.
