At 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912, the British ocean liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic at a speed of 20 knots. It slipped below the surface at 2:20 a.m. the following morning. It was a disaster that resulted in the deaths of 1,500 people on the ship's maiden voyage.
