It’s often said that it was Christopher Columbus’s voyage to America that gave us the idea that the world was round rather than flat. In actuality this discovery was probably made at least as far back as the 5th century BC by some Phoenician sailors.

The spherical Earth is one of the great counter intuitive lessons our species has learned and scientists may have just learned another.

A recent study from the University of Manchester suggests that just like our home planet the whole universe might also be round rather than flat.
