While the focus has been on the identity of the new Ireland manager, plenty of thought should be given to the grassroots - something which will make future managers' jobs easier.

An FAI EGM takes place today and one of the issues that will surely be under discussion is the FAI 'radius rule'.

Earlier this month, the Schoolboy FAI (SFAI) council proposed a restriction of 50km on the distance players aged 16 and under can travel from their school to join a club. The original rule was seen as a means of slowing the drain of players towards Dublin schoolboy clubs.

In contrast, the FAI want an 80km radius and plan to press ahead with their own proposal.

It all comes within a bumpy landscape where the SFAI, FAI, League of Ireland clubs live a parallel but mostly divided universe when it comes to player development. The players produced by schoolboy clubs tend to end up in the UK rather than benefiting League of Ireland clubs.

An Emerging Talent Programme was set up in 2006, the FAI have had two Dutch high performance directors (Wim Koevermans and the current incumbent Ruud Dokter) and there is an U19 Airtricity League, but there is no over-arching strucutre for creating the next generation of Irish players.

Dan McDonnell's analysed the problems at schoolboy and youth level on the Off The Ball Football Show last night.
