Girls on YouTube?

In an exciting first for HBO, they are going to screen the first two episodes of Lena Dunham’s Girls on YouTube just 12 hours after it originally aired in the States. It’s being shown on satellite TV here next Monday on Sky Atlantic, but if you can’t wait that long, go into HBO’s channel online and go for your life. It’s a Marmite kind of show. As many people are turned off by it as they are turned on, it’s about a group of 20-something hipsters from Brooklyn. Some of the characters are nauseating, but the writing is excellent and there are some genuinely brilliant moments, be they comical or excruciating or both.

Better Call Saul this November

HBO may have been taking tips from AMC in the States, who produced a deal with Netflix to show Breaking Bad just one day after it was aired in the States. Have your subscriptions at the ready, because there was some exciting news over the weekend….

The date for the première of the highly anticipated Better Call Saul has been announced for November. And Netflix are going to let us enjoy it the day after our American cousins. Breaking Bad was the big TV winner at last night’s awards ceremony, with Bryan Cranston winning Best Actor and the show winning  Best Drama overall.

Top five TV appointments to make this week

5. Golden Globes Monday RTE 2 8p.m. (red carpet, then full ceremony at 9p.m.)

Speaking of the Golden Globes, you all know the big winners by now, but why not tune in to see Leonardo di Caprio fluff his lines when introducing Philomena (he called it Philomania), Bono side step P Diddy when he went in for a kiss after presenting him with an award for best song or if Jacqueline Bisset’s curse word made it through the edit

4. Benefits Street Monday Channel 4 9p.m.

Controversial is not the word to describe this show. The first episode screened last week and leading charities in Britain have called for it to be taken off the air because it was causing ‘real harm’ to vulnerable and disabled, and breaching public service remit with a ‘sensational’ welfare series. It centres on a street in Birmingham, where they say 90% of residents are claiming social welfare. Last week, we saw drug-taking, shoplifting and cannabis growing.

 3. Don’t Tell the Bride Thursday RTE 2 9.30p.m.

The format is tried and tested, but it never fails to entertain watching a bumbling bridegroom stumble his way through wedding planning. The fourth series is back on RTE 2 and they’re kicking off with Waterford couple Natasha and Eddie. Eddie gets some help from his mates Roy and Paddy. Will he be able to pick the proper venue or nail it with his dress selection?

 2. Her Body, Our Babies Monday 9.35p.m. RTE1

A documentary centering on surrogacy as they follows an Irish couple who travel to India to meet the woman who is prepared to carry their child.

1. Amber Sunday the 19th January at 21.35 on RTÉ One

Love/hate has proven that Irish people love a good drama to round off the weekend, and after a hiatus with Room to Improve, RTE are bringing back some quality and gritty storytelling to our screens. The story is about the disappearance of 14-year-old Amber Bailey setting off a two-year search during which her family will go through unimaginable pressures. As the days, months and years progress the mystery deepens, and strange and terrifying clues come to light, raising yet even more questions. The world becomes gripped by the mystery of the missing teen.
