Over €250 million worth of goods are stolen across Ireland annually and over the Christmas period shoplifting costs up to €2 million a day.

Reporter with Moncrieff and presenter of Under the Covers, Henry McKean has done some investigating, to see who’s doing it and how they’re getting away with it.

The problem is not just in Dublin but nationwide. ISME, The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association have said the system is a joke. Retailers are adding on an extra 5% to the cost of the goods to cushion their losses.

Fashion, jewellery, supermarkets and electrical stores suffer the most. Only 1 in 20 of those convicted of shoplifting is given a jail sentence. Traders find going to court as a witness can sometimes cost more than the original theft.

Shop keepers and security guards are calling for exclusion orders to keep offenders away from retail areas, and feel longer sentences should be handed down. This Irish retail theft study said the longest sentence in the last year was a 5 month jail sentence with the offender being released early.
