The star of a new documentary about his life as a drag artist and gay man growing up in Mayo says it is not about him, but about Ireland.

'The Queen of Ireland' is in cinemas this week, telling the story of Panti Bliss.

The film was shot over five years by director Conor Horgan, and plays out against the backdrop of the marriage equality referendum in Ireland.

It follows Panti's journey from the small Mayo town of Ballinrobe, to striding the world stage.

"The film takes us behind the scenes with his alter ego Panti in the year she became the symbol of Ireland's march towards marriage equality," says Universal Pictures Ireland.

It comes as the Marriage Bill to allow full civil marriage for same-sex couples is set to be signed into law next week, having passed through the Oireachtas yesterday.

Panti - aka Rory O'Neill - rose to international fame after her speech at the Abbey Threatre on gay rights went viral earlier this year.

Then she took on a central role in the marriage equality referendum, calling for a Yes vote.

Director Conor Horgan told Newstalk Breakfast he was worried in the early days of the campaign.

While Rory O'Neill said the prospect of returning to his home town petrified him.
