The Cabinet has signed off on a new bill to rewrite the law on adoption, guardianship and parentage.

The Children and Family Relationships Bill is being hailed as the most important change in family law since the foundation of the State.

However the bill itself will not be published until Thursday.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says the legislation takes different family types into account.

However, Ivan Yates was a little critical of what the bill meant for those who were adopted: "Nobody drills down into the detail of this.

"We have been waiting for three or four years for the rights of 60,000 adopted people to have the right to find out who their birth mother was.

"I have seen nothing or heard nothing in the last 24 hours to say that this issue is on the back burner and hasn't been dealt with."

On the adoption issue, Chris said "there are a few ironies going on in Ireland at the moment.

"A child who is not yet conceived by IVF will have more rights to know their origins than somebody who was adopted.

"Three years these people have waited for some hope."

The pair were also critical of the rights of fathers in the bill: "We're now enshrining in relation to the rights of fathers a right of veto that unless you co-habit with the mother of the child, you have no rights.

"This bill confers no rights to where someone who is the natural father of a child and that relationship has broken down.

"You're assuming that there is no conflict of rights. What if there are two men who want to be a father of a child?

On the adoption issue, there are a few ironies.  A child who is not conceived by IVF yet will have more rights than those who are adopted. Three years these people have waited for any rights.
