Gardai are have launched a further appeal for information following the murder of Christy Daly (47) in Co. Offaly.

The remains were discovered in a drain close to a burnt out caravan where he lived just outside Clara yesterday morning.

The father of six had been shot a number of times.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have heard gunshots in the vicinity of the Bog Road in Kilbride between Sunday December 29th and Tuesday January 7th - and in particular December 29th and 30th - to come forward.

Inspector Kieran Keyes has been speaking to Midlands 103.

Cathal McMahon, crime correspondent with the Irish Mirror, spoke to Newstalk Breakfast earlier.

Cathal McMahon says Mr. Daly's body could have been lying in the drain for a number of days, since it was decomposing when it was discovered. The remains were not found when a fire in the caravan and two cars on site were dealt with on December 29th.

Officers are understood to be investigating organised traveller crime gangs operating in Offaly, and will also re-examine allegations of abuse made against Mr. Daly by three women a number of years ago in their search for a motive.

The body has since been removed from the scene
