The crew of the Irish naval vessel are getting back to work, just hours after rescuing 125 people in the Mediterranean Sea.

The ship was tasked to assist an overloaded inflatable craft in distress, about 115 kilometres north west of Tripoli.

Some 92 men, 26 women and seven children were on board the craft.

The Niamh was then re-tasked to take on board another 375 people from the Italian vessel Mimbelli.

While last week, the LE Niamh was called to the scene of an incident off the west coast of Libya and rescued 367 migrants.

Already, Niamh and her crew are back to work with nearly 500 more on board.

Naval press officer Lieutenant Commander Caoimhín Mac Unfraidh told Newstalk Breakfast the ship is currently en-route to Sicily.
