Shane Carthy had the Gaelic footballing world at his feet playing minor, under 21 and then senior for Dublin before depression derailed his progress.

Through his blog, Shane describes growing up in Portmarnock and his years in school. From primary school, he played every sport on offer and had no problem making friends.

The transition to secondary school came easily to Shane. Throughout his school years he managed both academic success and his true love, playing football.

Excelling from a young age, Shane's involvement with Dublin football began with U12 Easter tournament, in which he captained them to victory. As school continued, so did his football career and in 4th year, Shane decided to focus on his sporting commitments as his first year at County minor level beckoned. This period was one full of highs and lows, from losing in the All-Ireland final to a last-minute goal against Tipperary to finally winning the title in 2012 after beating Meath, as well as completing the Leaving Cert. It was then that the senior panel came calling, however with success comes attention.
