Mrs Brown's Boys Live outperformed Downton Abbey on Christmas Day by some three million viewers.

However, a further four million people though watched the period drama finale in the week that followed.

Brendan O'Carroll, meanwhile, bagged 9.69 million viewers in total.

Guest presenter Kieran Cuddihy described the Downton finale as awful and said he was glad the toxic relationship he had endured with the show has ended.

On the front pages:

The Irish Daily Mail: "Molly Martens and her father charged with Jason's killing".

The Herald: "Slain Jason's wife on murder charge".

The Irish Daily Star: "Drugs mules jail disease agony" - Michaela McCollum Connolly has been struck down by a tropical flu in a South American prison, where she is serving time for attempting to smuggle cocaine from Peru to Europe.

The Irish Daily Mirror: "Pirates of the Shannon" - the story about the stolen army dinghy that was used in an attempt to burgle recently flooded homes.

The Irish Sun: "Pain in the toll" - private motorway firm makes €58 million, but you will have to pay them if traffic is low.

Inside the newspapers: 

The Irish Daily Mail has a story on pay rises, saying that only about a quarter of those who expected to get a raise last year when successful.

New Year's resolutions covered in depth in many of the papers - quitting smoking a perennial favourite there.
