Bono has slammed Donald Trump at a concert in San Francisco, accusing him of trying to "run off" with the American dream.

The U2 frontman delivered a withering takedown of the Republican presidential candidate as clips from press conferences were projected on stage.

"The question we have for you this evening: What is your vision for this great nation?" Bono asked.

Trump declared from a giant screen: "I will build a great, great wall on our southern border and I will have Mexico pay for that wall."

To applause from the crowd, Bono responded: "Now, candidate, you understand it’s not just Mexican people who are going to have a problem with this plan of yours.

"It's everyone who loves the idea of America. Like the Irish, for example. Or the French. Or the Brazilians. Everyone who loves the idea of America.

"Everyone who believes what they read at the foot of the bottom of the Statue of Liberty: give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

The virtual showdown ended with one final jibe: "Good people are not going to stay silent while you run off with the American dream. You’re fired."

It was not Bono’s first time criticising the New York billionaire. Last month, in an interview with CBS, he described Trump as the "worst idea that ever happened to America".
