Work is beginning on a peace building and conflict resolution centre at the site of the former Maze Prison in the North.
World-renowned architect Daniel Liebskind is behind the plan.
He is responsible for projects like the Jewish Museum in Berlin and master-planner of the Ground Zero site in New York.
The Maze Prison was known colloquially as Maze Prison, The Maze, The H Blocks or Long Kesh.
It is situated on the outskirts of Lisburn and was used to house paramilitary prisoners during The Troubles from mid-1971 to mid-2000.
It was the site where 10 hunger-strikers – including Bobby Sands – died in 1981.
The facility was subsequently closed in 2000.
Mr. Liebskind was at the site today and as a result was not in attendance at the 9/11 commemorations in the US.
He said there is no other project in the world like this.
