A woman left badly injured in a crashed car for three days in Scotland - because police failed to follow up a report about it - has now died.

25-year-old Lamara Bell's brother made the announcement on Facebook this morning.

Ms Bell was found in the car with critical injuries last Wednesday despite the accident being reported days earlier to the police.

John Yuill, her 28-year-old partner who was driving the car, died in the vehicle following the crash.

Ms Bell was taken to hospital but sibling Martin Bell confirmed her death on Facebook.

Mr Bell said: "My sister just passed away."

A statement released on behalf of the Bell family said: "Sadly, our daughter has passed away. We now request that the media respect our privacy to grieve for Lamara at this difficult time."

A Yuill family statement said: "We are devastated by the sad news this morning.

"The families have messaged each other this morning and our thoughts are with John and Lamara's children at this very sad time."

An independent investigation is being carried out into the circumstances of the incident.

There have been calls for a wider inquiry into the operation of Scotland's single police force in light of the incident.

In a statement Police Scotland said: "On behalf of Police Scotland, we are all deeply saddened by the news of Lamara Bell's death this morning and I would personally like to express my deepest sympathies to her family and friends for their loss."

Earlier this week, Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said a member of the public initially contacted police to report a vehicle down an embankment near the M9 slip road at Bannockburn, near Stirling on Sunday, 5th July.

But for reasons "yet to be established" the details were not put on a police computer, which would have led to officers on the ground being alerted.

It was only when a second call was made on Wednesday and correctly passed to officers that the pair were discovered.
