A woman in Bangladesh has given birth to two twins – less than a month after the birth of her first child.
20-year-old Arifa Sultana gave birth to her first son in late February.
However, just 26 days later she was rushed to hospital complaining of pains in her stomach.
She had no idea she was still pregnant; however after doctors performed an ultrasound, they discovered she had two wombs – with two more babies to come.
The twins, a boy and a girl, were safely delivered and discharged four days later.
All three siblings are said to be doing well.
Dr Sheila Poddar, the gynaecologist who performed an emergency caesarean to deliver the babies, told the BBC that she had “never observed something like this before.”
She said Ms Sultana and her husband were “very poor” and had “never had an ultrasound before.”
She said this could explain why her two uteruses previously went unnoticed.
Doctors believe the three eggs ovulated and were fertilised at the same time.
Ms Sultana’s first baby was delivered prematurely.
The parents are delighted with the new additions to the family – although they are concerned about how they will cope financially.
Ms Sultana’s husband is a labourer who earns around €58 per month.
He told the AFP news agency: "It was a miracle from Allah that all my children are healthy. I will try my best to keep them happy."
