A woman rescued from the Mediterranean has given birth to a baby girl on board Irish naval vessel the LÉ Niamh.
The baby - who has been named "Destiny" - was delivered by Irish medics this afternoon.
Mother and baby have been transferred to an Italian Coast Guard vessel and are doing well.
They are now on their way to the Port of Trapani in Sicily, to receive post natal care.
There were 370 migrants on board the ship at the time - 256 rescued by the Niamh during a rescue operation yesterday, and another 114 rescuees from a Médecins Sans Frontiéres vessel deployed in the area.
The LÉ Niamh left Ireland for the Mediterranean on the 10th of July, taking over operations from the naval vessel LÉ Eithne.
Eithne arrived back in Ireland last week. It was involved in over 22 operations and saved 3,376 people over the course of two months at sea.
