A woman in her 20s has died after she was attacked at a house in County Meath.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the assault in the Rathmore area of Athboy.

Emergency services were called to the scene in the early hours of this morning and the woman was declared dead shortly afterwards.

The man was later arrested “at a different location” and was taken to Ashbourne Garda Station for questioning.

The woman’s body remains at the scene which has been preserved for forensic and technical examination.

The Office of the State Pathologist and a post-mortem examination is due to be arranged.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room has been established at Kells Garda Station.

The Garda investigation is ongoing.
