A woman in her 80s has died and three other people have been injured following a collision in Co Monaghan.

The two vehicle crash occurred at around 5.30pm yesterday evening on the R188 Monaghan to Cootehill Road at Stranooden.

A passenger, who was in her 80s, in one of the cars was taken to Cavan General Hospital following the collision. She was later pronounced dead.

There were four other people travelling in the car. The driver - a woman in her 40s - and another passenger - a man in his 90s - were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries. The two other passengers did not require hospital treatment.

The driver and sole occupant of the other car was also taken to Cavan General Hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.

The road remains closed this morning and diversions are in place. Garda Forensic Collision investigators are expected to examine the scene.
