A woman in her mid-60s has died following a crash in Co Leitrim this afternoon.

It happened shortly after midday on the Castlecara Road, Carrick on Shannon.

The woman died after the car she was driving went off the road.

Her body has been removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Sligo, where a post-mortem exam is due to take place.

The local coroner has also been notified.

A Garda forensic team will examine the scene at first light tomorrow morning.

The road remains closed, with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses who may have been travelling on the road this afternoon.
