The Department of Foreign Affairs said it's aware of the case and stands ready to provide consular assistance.

At least three Irish women have already died this year following bariatric surgery in Turkey.

The Department previously advised people to check with their own GPs before seeking out procedures overseas.

“Individuals should seek to inform themselves of both the risks and benefits of any procedures, and are advised to discuss their plans carefully with their own doctor, dentist or hospital specialist before committing to any procedure abroad,” it said in a statement.

Surgery in Turkey

At least nine Irish people who went abroad for medical and cosmetic procedures in the last three years have died.

In 2022, mother of four Shannon Meenan Browse died following complications from teeth surgery at the age of 32.

Her father Shane previously told Newstalk anyone considering surgery overseas must consider the risks and the lack of supports back home should anything go wrong.

He said the whole family now wants to make everyone in Ireland aware of the risks of travelling for surgery to “make sure this never happens to anybody else”.

Auralia Medical Group’s Head of Bariatric Unit David Keogh previously warned the number of reported deaths could actually be much higher than believed.

“Interestingly, the Department of Foreign Affairs have come out and said they believe that number to be much higher because not every incident is reported to them,” he said.

In Turkey, the price of bariatric surgery can be as low as €4,000 - with flights and hotels included.
